Application
Silver sulfadiazine serves as an antimicrobial agent used primarily for the prevention and treatment of wound infections in patients suffering from second- and third-degree burns. As a topical antibacterial, it is effective against various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as yeast, helping to prevent microbial growth on damaged skin. Due to its highly insoluble nature, it does not lead to hypochloremia, unlike silver nitrate treatments. The cream should be continuously applied to the burned area throughout the healing process or until skin grafting occurs. Special care is advised when applying over large areas, as plasma sulfadiazine levels can potentially rise to therapeutic levels causing side effects. It is particularly beneficial against Pseudomonas species, notorious for complicating burn therapy. Silver sulfadiazine is favored for its ease of use compared to other burn treatments like dilute silver nitrate solutions or mafenide ointment, offering an effective solution without significant absorption into the body fluids.

Product Information
Description
Silver sulfadiazine (AgSD), a sulfonamide antibiotic, effects a dual inhibitory action on bacterial growth by its sulfa moiety (SD-SDZ) that prevents bacterial folate absorption and subsequent DNA synthesis. The silver that is released from Silver sulfadiazine binds and disrupts the DNA structure, precluding bacterial DNA replication.
